Black femme producer, Multi-disciplinary artist and curator, Golden Champagne Flavored Sweatshirt has announced her debut full length record, titled “Expectant” available for preorder now, and set to release on November 20, 2020 on Oakland based imprint Ratskin Records. GCFS has crafted seven songs of futuristic, electronic-based soundscapes.. The tracks on “Expectant” span from psychedelic post-industrial chaos to more minimalist, hypnotic ambient soundscapes. The closing track, “Animals Calling Animals” perhaps the album's most visceral composition creates an intense fever-dream like climax compared to more hypnotic, ambient tracks such as “Pyroclastic Flows”. Without ever losing focus, or a central theme of distance space, and surrealism, the sounds of “Expectant” create an unwavering investigation of distortion and sound; bringing the listener into a tense and psychedelic journey. The themes of duality present throughout this record cannot be ignored. “Expectant” is at once, both aggressive and comforting, overwhelming and peaceful, terrifying and beautiful. With hammering, blistering eruptions of percussion carefully layered over dense worlds of buzzing, undulating synths, and layers of ripping... more credits releases November 20, 2020

Chancletas D’Oro, XUXA SANTAMARIA’s third release and second full-length LP, is a loose concept album focused on exploring femme and womxn narratives drawn from both history and works of fiction. Side A employs reimagined myths, fables, and original fictional narratives to create songs that challenge or obfuscate the received ideas around feminine agency, motivations, and desire. In Puro Animal and King Marsile, Córdova recasts fictional characters (from “Dracula” and “The Song of Roland” respectively) who originally were little more than victims or mute accomplices within their narratives as willing participants in their own corruption or liberation; White Pine uses the text of an early 20th century poem about tribal life in the Pacific Northwest, written by a white trapper, as a means to simultaneously twist and redirect the white gaze in on itself while still celebrating the knowledge of land and sea possessed by this continent’s first peoples. The Borges-inspired Rudos Del Mar, written while Córdova was traveling along the coast of Chile, details the odyssey of a group of pirates patrolling the seas beyond the edges of language, reason, and time; closing out the side, Color Of The Dark is a (comparatively) straightforward ode to lust, love, and ego disintegration between bodies of color within the darkness of a dance club.
Side B pulls from historical narratives, with subjects ranging from queer silent film star Alla Nazimova in Jardin de Alla to the Puerto Rican syndicalist and feminist pioneer Luisa Capetillo in ¿Quien Lleva Los Pantalones? The last three tracks of the album follow the stories of collective and individual revolutionary womxn; in River Neva, the International Women’s Day March in 1917 which kickstarted the Russian Revolution and the massacre on Bloody Sunday over a decade earlier drift into each other, as the lyrics imagine the march morphing into a psychedelic battleground on a frozen river covered with blood. Heaven’s Gate Path dramatizes the work of the womxn truck drivers of the North Vietnamese army, who risked life and limb to transport vital goods during the American War of Imperial Aggression (known in the U.S. as ‘the Vietnam War’), following them through humid jungles bombarded by artillery and fire, while ¿Quien Lleva Los Pantalones? closes out the album by using the story of the Puerto Rican syndicalist movement and Luisa Capetillo to meditate on the struggle for freedom, not only from the injustices of US empire but from the confines of gender roles and tradition.
Oakland. Freak Faith Folk. Let the spirit ride. Oakland’s Spellling (Chrystia Cabral) took the Bay Area scene by storm her first two years as a performing artist, with her demo version of "Pantheon Of Me" charting at Bandcamp’s #7 album of 2017. “Pantheon Of Me” demo received glowing reviews from Pitchfork, Tiny Mix Tapes, KQED, and was named one of 2017's top new local artists by the East Bay Express. This November, Ratskin Records is proud to release “Pantheon Of Me” fully remastered for all formats, first on 12" LP, followed by cassette and digital versions. “Pantheon of Me” combines dark freak-folk, neo-soul, industrial, and pop sensibilities into forty-two minutes of haunting, elegant dark vocal forward futuristic electronic music. Cabral recently released a 7’’ single on Sacred Bones Records, but “Pantheon Of Me” is her first full-length album, and we couldn’t be happier to be releasing it with the world on LP/Cassette/Digital this December.
“Listening to it feels like searching through a pitch-black house for secret performances that slowly reveal their process. It’s nonlinear textures recall Geidi” Primes-era Grimes, with dashes of New Weird American mysticism and divine soul.....” -Jenn Pelly, Pitchfork
"The songs on Pantheon of Me are fluid and nonlinear. They don’t oscillate between parts. They’re largely relieved of rhythmic underpinning. Instead they swell and billow outward, or else hover, wraithlike, in absorbing reveries. There’s gossamer guitar and streaks of stardust synth, beading keys and low-end murk. And sometimes the most stirring passages are spare save for one tone pulsing lighthouse-like in the distance. " - Sam Lefebvre, East Bay Express

An underwater wreckage haunted with robotic denizens of the murky dominions of the deep. This noisy, electronic sludge-fest is coated in more digital crust than the most barnacle laden antechamber of any cavernous deep-sea sorcerer's sanctuary.
What is commendable in this release beyond its relentless audio assault, is the sheer amount of creepy whispers Sanchez was able to squeeze into every cubic centimeter of this densely packed sound. Every evil uttering that weaves its way through the thickly laden wall of dark, dense, and deadly noise is threatening in some unexplained way.
"Your children will learn to build spaceships," would be an innocuous enough phrase in an everyday conversation, but in this shadowed trench, miles beneath the tumultuous waves, the words take on a sinister meaning that fills the listener with dread.
Whilst the electrified pieces of wreckage furiously oscillate in the frozen darkness of the deep, Styrofoam Sanchez creeps in and out of the eerie lights of the lanternfish, always maintaining eye contact, hissing abstractly disturbing phrases. How can either of you breathe in the pressurized darkness? Find out when you step into this Empire Underwater.

Amiable agent of pure chaos, Ryan King, moves like an animated line drawing, a high voltage wireframe that arcs easily and often, tazing or enlightening those around him. Musical instruments were invented for characters like this. King will hover towards a table of circuits the way a big bug gravitates to smaller bugs, their mere presence amplifying whatever freak plasma surges through his limbs. Once he sets to work, shedding his chrysalis to reveal wet shuddering wings, the whole living world offers itself up to loving devourment. Present yourself, when Bonus Beast appears live at Second Act ahead of his forthcoming LP release "Mental Decay".
DAX PIERSON "Live In Oakland" Cassette
“Don’t take your physical abilities for granted, for you can lose them, with a snap of the neck,” Pierson chants, as the manipulated vocal loop meets dense, orchestral synthesizers and undulating drones that escalate into a triumphant, cinematic beat for “A Snap of the Neck”, the album’s powerful opening track. Genre wise, Live In Oakland defies categorization; seamlessly blending elements from hip hop, dance music, experimental electronics, and free improv/radio art into an idiosyncratic electronic style.
Further into the album, “Treading Water” a offers a dense, complex balancing act of IDM and musique concrete in which Pierson samples and sequences the sounds of the medical equipment and motorized wheelchair that has been a part of his life since his 2005 accident. Pierson has relentlessly persevered through these physical limitations and endless learning curves by focusing his practice to unique interfaces with both software and hardware to produce an ineffaceable body of live and studio recordings.
Aesthetically, Live In Oakland blends heavy, multi-layered polyrhythmic percussion with sharp, mechanized, arpeggiated synth lines, meticulously sequenced transitions and geometric time changes which dramatically stop, start and pivot on an invisible dime. Field recordings, manipulated voice samples, and swelling synthesizers create unexplored caverns of ambient textures accentuated by bright percussion and synth leads. The A side was recorded at the legendary Oakland DIY venue LCM (Life Changing Ministries) and the B-side was captured more recently at the 3-day Stasis Festival at Pro Arts Gallery in downtown Oakland. While studio productions of many of these tracks exist, this live pairing of Pierson's work serves as an intimate and focused glimpse into the intensity and veracity that the tracks possess, especially within a live, free-form setting. The performances stand both on their own as individual live sets, but they also operate as continuum, and the result is a sonically deep, compositionally and conceptually complex offering from one of the bay area's most hardworking, esoteric and innovative producers.
Dig a Pit is an autobiography based on a personal experience of intimate partner violence. It focuses on the psychologically damaging impact of narcissistic abuse, an elusive form of emotional abuse rooted in manipulation, control, and well-concealed cruelty and humiliation. Each song examines different stages of recovery from processing feelings of vengeance, confusion, misguided desire for the abuser, to the practice of accepting and healing.
The tracks present an eclectic journey through multiple genres. First Single “Betrayal Internalized” showcases traces of bedroom pop and ambient electronic music. While second single “Exorcism” includes elements of trap and horror film soundtrack music.

Artist Bio Wizard Apprentice is an independent music producer, video artist, and live performer. As a highly-sensitive introvert, her multimedia projects are strategies for energetically managing an overwhelming world. Her music is a combination of lyrical precision, minimalistic composition, and technically amateurish charm.
“Carter’s singing harkens to that of a Catholic psalm or some sort of postmodern plainsong. Comparisons to Laurie Anderson would be appropriate. Although where Anderson confronts culture with a sideways glance, carter is entangled and entranced in the eccentric minutiae of her own psyche.” - The Wire credits released May 10, 2019

"Onyx Split Series One" is the first installment of the next iteration of our split single series. The first was the GOLD BOX which featured twenty artists featured across ten cassettes, all doing 2:30 tracks. The first is Hillboggle on the A side and Nerfbau (RK/MD) lineup on the B side. This is the first new NERFBAU material since co-founder and brother Jsun Adrian McCarty tragically left this mortal coil in the ghostship fire on Dec 2 , 2019. This release is for him.
Hillboggle is the nascent "noise-grass collaboration" of San Francisco recorder Derek Gedalecia and his father David on banjo and dobro, debuted in 2013 as a cassette b-side through Derek's prolific Headboggle project. Imagined as a way to explore the elder Gedalecia's own experiments with unconventional sounds in the 60s -- Dwight Pavlovic, Crash Symbols
Nerfbau are wrestling foam-choked streams and sunless oil-slicked oceans back into cataracts of blinding consciousness. Theorems are laid forth herein as "Error Swarms” and proofs conducted using custom sequencers, laryngopharynx, reprocessed wind instruments, guitars, sound-object graphical processors and Dow Chemical's styrenefoam modified with Cyanoacrylate. - Resipiscent Records
