There is no way to overstate the importance or uniqueness of this album existing in the world. To say we are honored to have a hand in releasing this into the world along with our friends and most trusted collaborators Psychic Eye is a monumental understatement. It is a feat of musically and artistically dark, ethereal, magical sonic wonder that will hopefully leave as big and beautiful impression onto you as it did to us.

Artwork by Pearl Thompson of The Cure.

"‘Silhouettes’ is a strong debut album that captures the shifting perspectives of its five-year writing period, and the emergence of Yama Uba’s uniquely crafted sound. With Akiko Sampson's charismatic vocals and rumbling bass combined with Winter Zora's sweeping guitar and saxophone soaring over velvet synthesizers and synthpop beats, Yama Uba makes several nods to their post-punk and darkwave predecessors while creating a sound entirely their own. Throughout each track, Yama Uba emerges as a songwriting unit capable of capturing the complexities of the human spirit, as fragile as it is powerful, as it experiences its own evolution. We are humbled and honored to announce new artist to the roster, INDIA SKY (@_indiasky_ ) with her seminal debut full length album "Somewhere Over The Mystic Moon" which is up for preorder today and releases to the world on Feb 5, 2023.

A long time vocalist and multidisciplinary artist, India has been honing her craft as a music producer for the past several years, performing her original songs oftentimes interwoven with dance, theatrics and video projections. In her music, India channels her passion for worldmaking, crafting a sound that combines evocative lyrics, layered synths, lush, carefully cultivated vocals and imaginative storylines that often spiral into the mystical. The sonic palette of Somewhere Over The Mystic Moon is both warm and cosmic, robust and ethereal, inviting and all encompassing.

The album's first single, “Bottom Of The Sea” is a siren's call that pulls you into the whirlpooling depths of a hypnotic and otherworldly ocean. This powerful, dreamy, dance anthem begs you to catch its wave and ride it, and leaves the sweet saltwater taste of what it might feel like to breathe under the sea with guardian whales at your side.

The second single, “Breakdown” was just released on December 7th to critical acclaim, is a hauntingly ecstatic showpiece featuring morose synthesizers, punctuating strings, and heavy, soulful vocals backed by driving percussion. The track shape shifts both sonically and thematically more than once with slow builds, huge breaks, and clever, vivid storytelling. If this track doesn't leave you with goosebumps and nostalgia for a place and time you’ve never been, nothing will.

India Sky’s ability to take you willingly into her conceptual worlds only strengthens as the album goes on. She originally composed five of the nine songs on Somewhere Over the Mystic Moon for her short film, The Life Cycle of Rainbows (2021, commissioned by EMBASSY Gallery in Edinburgh) which illustrates a soul’s journey through birth, maturity, death and the ancestral world. Other tracks on the project include songs that have been a part of her hybrid music + dance performances for years, reimagined, and re-shaped for the album, as well as newer compositions.

With "Somewhere Over the Mystic Moon", India Sky has created an inspiring and complex musical universe that is as conceptually, emotionally and sonically engaging as it is refreshing and rewarding.

The Bedroom Witch’s new album, ‘A Place of Hurt’, is OUT NOW (split release with Psychic Eye Records! It’s available on 12'' black vinyl, jewel case CDr and digital. We are so excited to get to help bring this record into the world for you all.

Self-described as “a love letter to heartbreak in the city”, the album reflects on the confusing and crowded paths. The Bedroom Witch takes to form human connections, find love, and self-actualize while combating societal dogmas projected onto her identity. Throughout the album, the sounds of a city grind against lush synths and angel-demon croons. Car tires screech above wistful synth lines and give way to shattered glass, while hypnotic sirens bleed into dissociative 80s drum machines.

We absolutely in love with this album, and are sure you will be too! APOH serves as the prequel to her 2019 album, Diaspora, on Psychic Eye Records.

"Legendary underground artist, trans icon, and birth mother of queer worlds— when Mona Demone gives us song, we dance!

S3RP3NT is a siren-wail from the thump thump thumping flesh machine. Gorgeous like a diesel mama! The song-beauty drives us forward, defiant, and transcendent, all joyous trans bodies and revolutionary release. Nourishment for our times.

If you ride the serpent / Then we are destined to collide Mona sings. Like how she filled her greasy bus with gender freaks and drove it across the country to make noise, and I remember by the time the bus got to the west coast, everyone had lost their minds. How we all long to be on that bus!

S3RP3NT is full of dance hits, lots of hips to go with Mona’s remarkable transsexual angel voice. Tones all her own. Crystals on the ocean. It’s the ocean you know from her comix, a dying ocean but you dance as she sings you into it because that voice.

Mona sings for the transsexuals. She doesn’t lie to us, she throws us into the honest best of who we are. I’ve seen her stitch trash into fantasy, but S3RP3NT is woven differently. It’s the hours of her motherhood, and time found between, over years. It's the persistent alien spirit. It’s Mona Demone birthing again, her child lovingly in her arms, her many trans families dancing and singing."

- tee clutch, 2022

"The songs of S3RP3NT are meant to be anthemic. Trans people don’t have enough anthems and we deserve to be celebrated. We break barriers simply by existing as our true selves. I want these songs to lift us up, to celebrate us, to dance, to connect and to dive deeper into our transformations. Let’s grow our roses now while we are still here. Make the soil rich and send it forward.

S3RP3NT is a collection of songs constructed in Los Angeles, between 2017 and 2019 on an Electribe esx-1. It’s a love letter to Los Angeles, its ocean, and to trans people. Each song of S3RP3NT begins with beats building and layering upon repetitive bass lines, and hooks to knit a shelter, to stretch out and hold our changing forms. Meanwhile the vocals loop and ride upon one another– a call to other trans people, femmes, NB, queers, sex workers, people struggling through capitalism, to join me in the present form they inhabit". - Mona Demone

When you are outside of LA, people like to point out that the water will run out within the year, but inside the city, the traffic carries on. “light as a feather, stiff as a board” and somehow it all just floats.

“Don’t drink the water and watch the direction of the sun.If you fall down, you’ll turn to sand and dust and you’ll never find your way back home.” -BRIN3

It’s a city on the ocean. Sometimes I’d be missing it for weeks when it’s just a train or bus ride away. However, the ocean was my reset. Comprised of the same water that has always been on earth. I called it the library of time. It holds the oldest information- the most solid part of me - the power to transform.

“Ancestorial knowledge, the past that follows, informs your cells from the start “- WAV3 RAV3

This album is: new estrogen, hot oil in pistons, delphinium growing between rocks, queer noise, beat worship, connection, sweat - a journey to motherhood. Serpents represent creative life force and rebirth. It’s transformation, healing, and immortality through a linage of queer people before us. As trans people we get to create ourselves on our own terms and in this we also create our own family structures. Together, we erode a binary and open up for more.

I started transitioning shortly after moving to LA and just before starting diesel mechanic school. Before that I lived on the queer land project in the Southeast, that had me feeling so fluid, I didn’t feel the need to declare any specific gender. The plan was I’d learn to work on trucks, then move back to Tennessee where I’d teach any queer that wanted to learn how to convert diesel vehicle to veggie oil and open a truck stop called Dandy’s off the highway nearby. There’d be a bright neon yellow dandelion towering over the highway, welcoming, truckers and road trippers to a full-service diesel repair, 24hour karaoke bar and a diner sustained completely by queers.

“In your eyes, it’s a man with a bent mind, undefined by the confines of the flesh that holds us.” -SPIN3.

The moment I entered the city, by way of dusty green humming diesel bus (my home for the past six years) something was already shifting in how I felt. I enrolled at LA trade tech for diesel. After school I’d take the bike path down Venice to change oil and in the evening, I’d ride the Expo line home, put a dress on and finally relax. I wore so many different “hats” and had several different names depending on where I was.

“Lipstick as amour, earrings as shields, Eyeliner sharper than steel, as sharp as you feel.” - NO FL3SH

Like Genesis P-Orridge said, I wanted to rob the bank of information. My plan was to return to the land project with all the knowledge that we all relied on to drive the country roads. In my mind I was robbing the bank, but I wasn’t an out trans person in school or work. Now I see that not being open about who I was robbing my power. I spent most days stressed out to truly ever immerse myself into the inner workings of trucks.

“We bring your destruction; this is your end. Your poisoned waters, rising from the gutter.” - WHOR3Z

From this dysphoria came a need to make music which defined my existence. I’d wrap myself in sequins, leather, gems, tower in heels. I’d tromp around with a suitcase full of chords and mixers, balance the levels, open my lungs to fill the air. We’d fall into the beat together. We were in our bodies. I’d sing to everyone , both on, and about start their transition, all in their own ways.

Ultimately it is T4T (trans for trans) love which has allowed me to connect to my body, to fully see and feel seen. When I met a hot NB cutie who set me afire in the height of LA summer, as I biked the sun faded streets to the words “share this dimension” would repeat in my head until our realities entwined. It surprised us when we became pregnant. We were so queer we had almost forgotten that sex wasn’t just exploration of others and self. Then we were two trans people expecting a new life. When I plugged in my gear, raised my head back and sang,” I have seen you, in my dreams” it started to hit different. A sound wave bent and amplified, cutting through the humidity. Motherhood as a chance to see it and feel it again for the first time. A serpent finding its tail."

We’ve always been here, the mouth of the future

We are not going away, we are not going away

Rejoice! She has given us another world! - MONA DEMONE

A long time vocalist and multidisciplinary artist, India has been honing her craft as a music producer for the past several years, performing her original songs oftentimes interwoven with dance, theatrics and video projections. Her creative process is guided by an intimate tuning into, and conversation with ancestry, legacy, power, spirit, intuition and emotion and through her work India seeks to illustrate “the invisible worlds” that shape her lived experience. As a seasoned artist and director, India has a track record for creating elaborate, imaginative large-scale ensemble productions as well as intimate smaller scale performances, film and installations. In her music, India’s channels her passion for world-making, crafting a sound that combines evocative lyrics, layered synths, lush, carefully cultivated vocals and storylines that often spiral into the mystical.

"Bottom of the Sea" is India Sky’s first single off of her forthcoming debut project “Somewhere Over The Mystic Moon" to be released in Fall 2022. It is a siren's call that will pull you into the whirl-pooling depths of a hypnotic and otherworldly ocean. This powerful, sultry, synthy, dance anthem begs you to catch its wave and ride it, and leaves the sweet saltwater taste of what it might feel like to breathe under the sea with guardian whales at your side.

"Sicko is a freak 4 freak, crazy 4 crazy wet blankie. This album was hobbled together over the years following the Ghost Ship fire which occurred December 2nd, 2016. It’s been 5 years (wild) and I believe all us survivors are vastly different people since then. My mental health issues were always a bit out of control and the aftermath of Ghost Ship, despite the labor of love that went into a massive mutual aid effort I had rarely experienced before, sent my brain into a deep, perhaps necessary, pit. The work that birthed this album was my rope, and while some of these sounds and songs feel old, they were built slowly and with the support of my friends. I am so grateful for medication and the disability justice community. I am deeply grateful for my fellow sick in the head friends who are dedicated to working on themselves and with each other. I am really grateful for all the people in my life who choose to stay connected to me despite some not cute behavior, and I feel additionally grateful for those who hear me when I call them out on the same.

All my music is dedicated to Beni and the Queer and Trans freaks that make my life so fun and wholesome and nerdy and joyful and cool and weird. I want safety and empowerment for us all. I want us to make stuff when we want to and consume stuff when we want to. I want us to have shelter and whatever we need to feel the least shitty on our shitty days and super happy on our happy days." — Sharmi Basu, Beast Nest

"A sonic journey comprising of six tracks, Sharmi Basu’s "Sicko" is the zenith to their expansive catalog of experimental compositions that meditates on envisioning a sense of personal and collective liberation. This forty-four minute long masterpiece bends, weaves, repeats, deconstructs then rebuilds sound to formulate a new language of healing communicated uniquely through the world of Beast Nest. As a prominent educator and healer within their community, Basu’s artistic output has always been connected to sharing the power of compassion, and how to create tangible bonds between marginalized people through music. Even in the most dissonant valleys of Sicko’s sonic landscape, Basu never abandons their listener. Rather, they descend into darkness with you as the instrumentation surrounds you with the rhythmic pulse of various arpeggiators and drawn out sound textures crescendoing up to the LP’s closing waves of bliss.

"Sicko" offers more to the listener than just an album — it is an experience of aural idiosyncrasies and multi-dimensional processes that lead one to find solace away from the colonialist confines of the material world. Upon multiple replays of this album, I was reminded of the catharsis I felt when I first fell in love with Beast Nest’s work: a sense of communal healing Basu generously offers to those closest to the heart of their artistic vision."

— Sepehr Mashiahof, The Bedroom Witch

"Sharmi Basu delivers an interplanetary opera of diasporic survival. The tracks lead one on a journey of perseverance and/of sound. One’s feet loses contact with the ground and one’s imagination collides with the sensorial immediacy of the moment. And while it is a narrative firmly placed in joy and discovery, it presents a model or trajectory of how harmony cannot exist without dissonance and richness can only extend out from origins of emptiness. “Sicko” is disembodied and yet simultaneous grounding, questioning one’s reliance on mainstream narratives of direction. It is a multivocal party in a world in which even music receives the violence of categorization and conclusion. This album is the sound of persistence of joy in a world where one must question the surplus and generation of body supremacies. We are carried through on the beat and the unavoidable need to move together in dynamic times."

The strange and alien worlds Headboggle opens up throughout the album are a complex mix of Gedalecia’s mischievous sense of humor, love of pure sound, and quirky melodic sensibility inspired by his studies of ragtime and classical music. Whereas previous LPs were more improv-based in their arrangements, “Digital Digital Analog” refines Gedalecia’s decades of research into synthesis through a highly focused and refined compositional lens. The album represents the culmination of 20 plus years of sonic experimentation spanning noise, new music, avant garde, collage, soundtrack oriented music, and so much more into a meticulously refined and generously melodic approach. “Digital Digital Analog” far eclipses the artist's previous works in a myriad of ways wholly rewarding for the listener.

Feminine Care is a collection of hypnotic mood swings, spirit jazz and haunted incantations that explore permutations of femininity and care between 2016 - 2020. These songs were moments of freedom and release in the midst of the Trump administration, Black terror, wildfires, displacement and heartbreak.

This album is a rite of passage. These compositions ask, “What does it really mean to be cared for, caring, carefree and careful in the feminine experience?”

Absurdly titled after the puritanically cursed tampon aisle in American drugstores, Feminine care plays with ideas of cycles, failed gender-conformity, climate-change, the black female body as a “pre-existing condition,” tenderness within femme rituals, and the relationship between American horror and sexuality. This is an investigation into the femme experience, behind the capitalization of our bodies, beyond binary thinking and before the witch trials and our dislocation from the natural world.

HEADBOGGLE "DIGITAL DIGITAL ANALOG" - PREORDER {Bandcamp}

For his second full-length and first on vinyl with Oakland-based Ratskin Records, Derek Gedalecia’s HEADBOGGLE project has taken the critically acclaimed hybrid one-minute electronic-stylings of 2019’s “Polyphonic Demo” (Ratskin) and expanded his ideas into 24 longer form pieces that pull from Parliament/Funkadelic as much as Raymond Scott. “Digital Digital Analog” could easily be undulating in the catacombs of label discographies from Editions Mego to Sub Pop or even Mute Records, but has landed in the bin of the Oakland esoteric imprint Ratskin Records. We couldn’t be more excited to present this on beautiful limited edition clear vinyl and digital download to the world, certainly Headboggle's most astute and developed work to date.

With it’s compositionally adventurous spirit, and sonically cinematic presentations, “Digital Digital Analog" stands as Gedalecia’s most refined and articulate work to date. Most of the tracks for "Digital Digital Analog” came out of the continued exploration of the Dave Smith Prophet polyphonic synthesizer and was culled from many hours of rehearsals in preparation for Ratskin Records 2019 US Tour.

Picture the undulating synth lines of mid-‘70s Parliament transplanted to a petri dish and allowed to grow, or maybe the soundtrack to the most baffling caper movie ever made, and you might have a fraction of what Digital Digital Analog contains. This 36-minute record finds Gedalecia working across a variety of rhythm and genre templates, the titles (“Ancient Trap,” “Skip Pop, ”Breakdance Music”) provoking many questions and fewer answers. The music can be at times both stark and grandiose, desolate and luxuriant, dead-serious and ridiculous, dirge-like and joyful; it’s all de rigueur for Headboggle.

Gedalecia has taken the best and most developed parts of a myriad of sound synthesis and production techniques and coalesced it into a forty minute tour de force of forward-thinking, cinematic and whimsical music. To contextualize this album as anything short of his grand opus within the context of his vast 100+ release back catalog wouldn’t be giving “Digital Digital Analog” it’s due diligence.

"Feminine Care" by LEXAGON is a collection of hypnotic mood swings, spirit jazz and haunted incantations that explore permutations of femininity and care between 2016 - 2020.

Lexagon’s sound swallows you into a thick atmospheric cloud of dark melodic incantations that feel both delicate and dangerous- ancient and haunting. Her sound pushes vocal pop into realms of “spirit-noise” often letting the ghost in the machine distort and influence the compositions of her tracks.

Field recordings of storms and animals, clarinet, cajon, omnichord, journal entries and whispered confessions swell into rising tides of breathy ballads and electronic spirituals.

Listen to the soundscape of a locked diary, sonic sketches oscillating between form and dissolution.Hear the musicality of the inner mind- intrusive thoughts playing peek a boo with focus, an argument between self and shadow, an overstimulated nervous system draped in sweet harmonies that melt into the uncanny valley; making rhythms out of syllables, tears in bayou cemeteries and breathlessness from being policed in Amerikkka.

When describing her music practice Lexagon states, “I’m fascinated with the idea of exploring alternate, hidden versions of myself and the thousands of ancestors who’ve worn my face- music is a spiritual technology that allows me to drop into the deepest parts of myself and lineage...I’m not interested in making pretty music as much as capturing the variables and energies moving through me in a given moment. I see my music practice like an astrological natal chart- a blueprint documenting me and the cosmos right now.”

Downtempo tracks like Hurricane slip you into a brooding sultry soundscape, humid with lush reverb and resonant drones. Field recordings of rain and thunder swell between lyrics like “Drench me, I can go all night” or “torrential rains between your legs” as a lovesick ode to female ejaculation.

While other songs like Values shuffle syncopated rhythms that weave samples of paper money and pitch-shifted clarinet, almost mirroring the self-aware nuance of the chant- like lyrics “I can’t afford a good night’s rest” to “I can’t afford to be afraid, look me in the eyes-unlock the cage.” Her vocal delivery is raw and vulnerable, exposing the threads of her grief, anxiety and courage.

As a filmmaker, Lexagon’s compositions are often crafted with a moving image in mind. Some of her compositions like The Motivation act as a documentary soundtrack: picture a summer afternoon, she is sitting on a California beach and writing down notes about metaphysics from Walter Russell’s “The Secret of Light” while staring off into the blue horizon. There is both a sense of channeling and auto ethnographic archiving layered between sounds of crashing waves and sizzling sea foam.

Feminine Care nods to the women who throw bricks and soup cans, the crones whose wisdom mends our broken hearts, the mothers who sing the lullabies of our ancestors, the post-men-opausal badasses with beards, the two-spirits who are both, and most of all- for Black women who conjure worlds of possibility with every breath.

“Nightmare In Paradise” by Tyler Holmes was written in the wake of a violent trauma that Holmes and tour mates experienced on their last night in Puerto Rico at the end of an otherwise blissful tour. Holmes stayed behind with longtime collaborator and friend San Cha to care for their injured bandmate, taking shifts sleeping on a hospital floor and staying with friends in downtown San Juan. Upon returning stateside, Holmes experienced intense PTSD, bouts of agoraphobia, and extreme ongoing stomach pain. The symptoms drove them to composition as a survival tool and means to process extreme dark thoughts, anxieties and emotions. Initially the project began as acoustic guitar demos sounding like Hole’s MTV Unplugged performance remixed by Tricky, the songs eventually morphed into the electro-acoustic aquarium that the album contains now.
Despite the album’s violent and chaotic conceptual underpinnings, “Nightmare In Paradise” is the culmination of many years of toil, struggle, scrapping and re-editing, crying and singing, ultimately rebirthing the most complex and nuanced musical offering yet from Bay Area artist Tyler Holmes. “Nightmare In Paradise” is Holmes’ most refined and deliberate distillation of concept and composition working in a complicated and refined harmony. Through even more delicate and nuanced vocal presentation across the twelve songs, beds of layered acoustic guitar, minimal electronics, cello and woodwinds, Holmes has refined their hybridization of Electronic / Folk / R&B and Modern Black Classical music to a feverish crescendo on “Nightmare In Paradise”.

“I’ve been calling this my ‘adult-contemporary’ album because it is leagues softer than anything I’ve ever released, especially as a collection. This work was created as a document of my personal recovery from a very violent traumatic event and maps my experience with healing, PTSD, and illness. If the record is soft, or soothing, it is so because I needed to tell the story that way to make it palatable to process for myself. I needed to channel brutality through a healing lens to be able to recount the experience.”

The album features 12 players across its 12 tracks and a duet co-produced by LA’s GESS. Holmes’ uncanny ability to constantly reinvent and reimagine their own compositions through the addition of live players, remixes, in both expanded and minimal forms shines through on several tracks on the album, highlighted through lush strings and wind sections, such as on the lead track “Confuse Me”.

These moments aren’t beautiful accidents however, rather delicately wrapped sonic gifts in musical form. Pulling from genres as disparate as Harsh Noise and Dop-Wop, Holmes breathes life into their own uniquely personal sonic and conceptual world.

Holmes states “I wanted to create a white space. A clean slate; where emotions (no matter how painful) could present themselves fluidly and be wiped clean. To process the traumas and tribulations one by one, each feeling a colorful gesture on blank canvas. Each wound here for a moment and then passing off into the void to make way for the next.”

The album’s lead single and visual “Confuse Me,” a breakup song written as a reflection in the aftermath of a long tumultuous romance. Minimal synths, electronics and horns lay delicately below Holmes’ breathy, layered vocals. On “Confuse Me” Holmes channels a reflecting pool of emotion, building intricate architectural structures within a single feeling or experience, providing the listener with an intimate window into the destruction and need for rebuilding which informed the album. Through precision and stark, pop minimalism- the listener is transported into a space where Holmes is oftentimes present in the space, whispering out of the speakers. Other times, the lyrics reflect inwardly on Holmes own subjective orientation to the story (talking to themself,) but never closing the listener off completely. Holmes has allowed us into their vivid universe as an observer, friend and perhaps even on occasion, the subject. Like a jellyfish following an unknown torrent, we float through the rich sonic landscape of “Nightmare In Paradise '' a nd all of it’s vivid conceptual dichotomies. Rich in feeling, form, and execution, “Nightmare in Paradise'' w ill appease fans from Bjork, FKA Twigs, Xiu Xiu, and Florist, while simultaneously carrying them to spaces untouched by these names adorned to so many of us.

Dax Pierson’s debut solo LP is coming via San Francisco’s Electronic powerhouse imprint Dark Entries Records and Oakland’s Ratskin Records collective. Pierson, an Oakland-based underground legend, has pushed the boundaries of experimental electronic music with his soul-moving opus Nerve Bumps; A Queer Divine Dissatisfaction, an endeavor two long years in the making. On Nerve Bumps, Pierson blends hip hop, jazz, John Carpenter-esque arpeggios, trap/anti trap-influenced percussion, and musique concrete-informed experiments. Futuristic synthesizers cut through layers of fog as Pierson’s bombastic drum programming forges new worlds within themselves.
Pierson tells a complicated and inspiring story on Nerve Bumps, which is both a privilege and a gift to experience. Tracks such as “I Slay The Pain” reiterate that although Pierson has to live his life as a quadriplegic, this does not define him as an artist or as a person. The cinematic “For The Angels” plays as a masterclass in heart and body-moving rhythms and undulating synthesizers. Pierson directly confronts the listener on “Snap”, an act of solidarity with the disabled community. Sputtering orchestral swells become encapsulated by splintering shards of Pierson’s voice, evoking his relentless determination to learn new music production methods as well as share his experience with losing certain physical abilities. The album’s closing track, “NTHNG FKS U HRDR THN TM”, is a perfect distillation of the varied emotions explored on the album. Warm, heavy synths masterfully guide us down a psychedelic slope through the track’s twelve minutes. On Nerve Bumps, honesty, empathy, and humanity bleed through the speakers like a dark liquid just beneath the skin’s surface. For Pierson, music is his lifeblood, both as a creator and a listener.

Nerve Bumps was mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The front cover features a painting of pink and green horizontal stripes by Pierson’s partner, artist Chuck Nanney. A photograph of Pierson’s wheelchair by Lenny Gonzalez graces the back sleeve. Dax’s guiding mantra throughout this journey has been a quote from choreographer Martha Graham: “No artist is pleased… There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”

"Abstract turntablist, and sound sculptor Maria Chavez and avant-garde guitarist Lucas Gorham. This collaboration afforded us with a unique opportunity to work with both artists and release a sonically and conceptually beautiful sound work. Both Chavez and Gorham are known internationally for their acute investigations into improvisational sound, the complexities of chance improvisation and free-jazz inspired compositional
methods, unifying the breath of all sounds big and small, and seemingly the very essence of sound herself.

On “Live At Jewel’s Catch One”, the duo creates a deep, rhizomic, sonic investigation of texture and rhythm that span deep listening through chance operations. Synthesizing the space between Chavez’s uniquely brilliant and idiosyncratic methods of turntablism and Gorham’s fractured, abstracted lap-steel guitar/electronics work, a beautiful sonic adventure emerges. Chavez’s extended technique of turntablism, chance operations and compositional strategies pull equally from John Cage, Elaine Radigue, Pauline Oliveros and DJ Premier alike.

The special editions are almost sold out, last count at the time of writing this there were only TWO special editions remaining.

"It’s obvious just from listening that blood, sweat and tears have been poured into this album’s production. Each of the tracks function both on their own and as a whole. The record veers between sublime washes of downtempo techno beats over hypnotic, buzzsaw waves on tracks like ‘Sea Creatures’, whilst tracks like ‘Horsemouth’ jar the listener’s brain with snarling, crunchy waves of synth and skittering beats, though never suffer from this juxtaposition. Each track flows neatly into the next, perhaps because of the keen line of thinking behind Expectant’s hyperactive catharsis. Golden Champagne Flavoured Sweatshirt explains that “the personal and political nature of creating art under capitalism has been an intense journey of self actualisation. This is to remember these feelings, this time, this part of my story.” - Astral Noize

"Golden Flavored Champagne Sweatshirt’s new record, like so many great boundary-breaking sonic works, says a great deal with a careful fusion of sounds. Yet it’d be foolish to claim it’s simply a response to recent catastrophes, despite knowing titles like “3.26_”. 2020 might have been one of the most traumatizing years in recent history for American Black people in particular, but those traumas have roots dating back decades, even centuries. Albums like Expectant, with its distinctly misanthropic POV and pointed discord, speak to ancient queries still ignored, often aimed less at sophistic resolution than release." - The Tape Deck

"GCFS is one of the artists looking to take electronic music out of its almost cloistered existence and bring it to a wider audience. She's a multimedia artist - working in everything from watercolours to digital to create visual art - and she brings the sensibilities of both musician and painter to her work. Her pieces are a type of synaesthesia - generated sounds which create images and pictures in your head.

This isn't music you can listen to as background or something you're going to hear piped in to some coffee shop. This is music you have to pay attention to. Like a painting which reveals its secrets the longer you stare at it, the more you listen to Expectant the more you will appreciate the atmospheres and moods it creates."

Mixed Reality Festival is an immersive VR event for de-colonial artists that untethers itself from the daily oppression of our lives. This project, by Ratskin Records , will feature current and upcoming artists that push the boundaries of music, experimentation, healing, and self-expression in 2020. Through years of arts-based organizing, we have found that our communities are in crisis around physical, emotional, and financial access to physical art spaces and COVID-19 has only exacerbated this crisis. As queer and trans disabled artists of color, we are often overlooked as a community that has, in many ways, defined the cultural output of the Bay Area. We are in the position of archiving our struggles and creating social relevance through our own narratives. Our shared value of collective liberation has given us the integrity, passion, and inside knowledge needed to develop a platform that responds to the needs of our communities.

Thank you much for your continued support of Ratskin. This year has been challenging for many different reasons, but we have so many projects in the works that are really inspiring, that we cannot wait to share with you. We are extremely excited to present you with one of our two remaining releases of 2020 up for pre-order now. Our 90th release, Golden Champagne Flavored Sweatshirt, presents "Expectant" available on Cassette, CD Digipak, and Download. The preorder is up now on our Bandcamp page.

There will also be a Limited Artist Edition of the CD (ltd to 15) that comes with a Custom Puzzle Which unlocks an additional section of the album, as well as an all-over print T-Shirt. Keep your eyes peeled for these special items.

Black femme producer, Multi-disciplinary artist, and curator, Golden Champagne Flavored Sweatshirt has announced her debut full-length record, titled “Expectant” available for preorder now, and set to release on November 20, 2020 on Oakland based imprint Ratskin Records.

GCFS has crafted seven songs of futuristic, electronic-based soundscapes. The tracks on “Expectant” span from psychedelic post-industrial chaos to more minimalist, hypnotic ambient soundscapes. Without ever losing focus, or a central theme of distance space, and surrealism, the sounds of “Expectant” create an unwavering investigation of distortion and sound; bringing the listener into a tense and psychedelic journey.

GCFS’s “Expectant” makes huge strides in both concepts and feel from earlier self-released works, creating tracks that are both visceral and technically engaging, idiosyncratic and speak to layers of the collective subconscious of sound. “Expectant” shines a highly-focused yet surreal lens into the despair and desperation of an entity in chaos.

“Frozen Clock Hovering” is at once both dark and hopeful, disorienting and insightful, melancholy, and victorious. Through a meticulously idiosyncratic creative process, Shanahan has created a contemporary electronic music masterwork, bridging ambient and modern dance music. The nuance, care, and intentionality put into these compositions help solidify a psychedelic musical offering worth engaging in completely. The sounds of Frozen Clock Hovering oscillate just underneath our eyelids to sew warm beds as a temporary respite. Electronic pulses trigger huge electronic events, shooting us into space and slowly recoiling back through the cold atmosphere. plunging into the cold barren sea, leaving a faint crease in the sky, like brushes painting a sonic map to unknown futures, when you look back up into an unknown space all you can see is one, isolated Frozen Clock Hovering, "

End Of The Year Breaths:

There will be one more release going up for preorder on October 16, 2020. We will also be launching our brand new website and web store on that same day, but in terms of releases, that's it for 2020. We are taking the rest of the year to reset and come back stronger with more specific intentionality around all of the projects we are working on. We are shifting into a more collective based mode with Ratskin artists Beast Nest and Wizard Apprentice running operations and content strategy as well as curation This is a huge step for the label and all of our artists as they are two of the most brilliant minds we have ever come in contact with. To say it's an honor is a huge understatement. We have updated our mission statement and would like to share it with you here:

MATMOS | matmos.bandcamp.com

Matmos is M. C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel. Currently based in Baltimore, the duo formed in San Francisco in the mid 1990s, and self-released their eponymous debut album in 1997.

Marrying the conceptual tactics and noisy textures of object-based musique concrete to a rhythmic matrix rooted in electronic pop music, the two quickly are known for their highly

unusual sound sources: amplified crayfish nerve tissue, the pages of bibles turning, water hitting copper plates, liposuction surgery, washing machines, chin implant surgery, contact microphones on human

hair, rat cages, tanks of helium, a cow uterus, human skulls, snails, plastic objects, cards shuffling, laser eye surgery, whoopee cushions, balloons, latex fetish clothing, rhinestones, insects, life support systems, inflatable blankets, rock salt, solid silver ingots, the sound of a frozen stream thawing in the sun, a five gallon bucket of oatmeal. These raw materials are manipulated into surprisingly accessible forms, and often supplemented by traditional musical instruments played the group’s large circle of friends and collaborators.

Dr. Drew Daniel is an associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University in the Department of English Literature and Schmidt is a homemaker.

Their most recent album is entitled The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises in Group Form, and was released on Thrill Jockey Records In August of 2020. It involves 99 collaborators and it’s tempo is entirely at 99 Beats per Minute and is around 3 hours long.

WIZARD APPRENTICE | wizard-apprentice.com | wizardapprentice.bandcamp.com

WIZARD APPRENTICE (pronouns: she and/or they) is a music producer, live performer, and video artist. As a highly sensitive introvert, her multimedia projects are strategies for managing an overwhelming world. Her music is a combination of lyrical precision, minimalistic composition, and technically-amateurish charm. She creates media that takes advantage of user-friendly technology, skipping time consuming learning curves to focus on inventing highly relatable language for subtle personal experiences. She’s not a gear-head, rather, a digital folk artist who vividly and simplistically expresses her inner world using resourcefulness and honesty. Her video work incorporates green screen graphics, digital puppetry, and compositing to produce imagery that’s cerebral, campy, and hypnotic. She combines song and video to create multimedia live performances that explore intimate emotional themes.

“Carter’s singing harkens to that of a Catholic psalm or some sort of postmodern plainsong. Comparisons to Laurie Anderson would be appropriate. Although where Anderson confronts culture with a sideways glance, carter is entangled and entranced in the eccentric minutiae of her own psyche.” - The Wire, November 2018

DAX PIERSON | daxpierson.bandcamp.com | ratakin.org/artists/daxpierson.html

Dax Pierson is a musician/producer who has called the East Bay home for 20 years. He was co-founder of the bands Subtle and 13 & God, a touring member of left of center hip-hop group Themselves and an associate of the Anticon collective. In 2005 Subtle encountered black ice in the middle of the country while on tour and flipped over, leaving Dax with a spinal cord injury in the 5th and 6th vertebrae. Since his individual fingers are now paralyzed, Dax has switched to using a laptop controlled with iPad apps in order to produce. The last 12 years have been spent exploring the possibilities that technology could offer, often with time-consuming learning curves. His work is currently informed by limitations, college radio segues, hip-hop, ‘90s post-rock, odd time signatures, new techno, ambient drones, bobbing head beats and sentimentality. Dax released "Live In Oakland" to critical acclaim on R Ratskin in2019 and has a brand new LP due out on Ratskin Records / Dark Entries Records in early 2021.

JEFF CAREY | http://jeffcarey.foundation-one.org | https://jeffcarey.bandcamp.com

CORAL REMAINS | coralremains.bandcamp.com

(ritual for Jsun featuring RK & MD ) CORAL REMAINS is a post industrial sound and sculptural installation personifying the trash island in the pacific gyre. Spawning from a hybrid of human DNA and trash, CORAL REMAINS is a dystopian, amalgamated magnification of failed civilizations, spliced rogue technologies gone awry spawning dark pulses of technological neurosis and inner psychosis . When fish put fin to sand then you'll understand, fish can carry guns. CORAL REMAINS represents the last molecule before total conversion of humans into futuristic trash receptacles. Human, your skull will be in a museum. Continuum invoking of Jsun Alien who left this mortal coil on December 2, 2016.

Fall 2020 Mission Statement.

Ratskin Records is a collective record label and archival imprint championing de colonial experimental music centered in the Bay Area. We focus on LGBTQ+, Black, Native, POC, and disabled artists who create work that is sonically and politically pushing boundaries toward liberation. We work together to create an alternative to an industry that has historically exploited and devalued artist labor and requires artists to exhaust themselves to fulfill their life’s passion. We see the work of de colonial artists as world-building activism that centers empathy and basic human needs. The crux of our work is centered in engaging the healing power of sound for communities in struggle.

Our goal is to pay and provide material resources for artists whose work lies on the margins of mainstream consumption. Our work is multifaceted in that we take multiple avenues to address issues around accountability, accessibility, racism, transphobia, and other systems of oppression. Ratskin is curation centered in its practice and provides resources for artists to create self-determined spaces. - Sharmi Basu, Tieraney Carter, Michael Daddona , 2020

We are beyond excited to be releasing this breathtakingly stunning and heart-felt work of contemporary/future electronic music from Portland-based producer Joel Shanahan (Golden Donna, Auscultation, Puritan Waste, et al.) “Frozen Clock Hovering” takes the form of two sixty-minute cassettes housed in an elaborate box-set / art-edition style packaging, as well as digital download.

For his first release for Ratskin, Shanahan presents a prescient double full-length cassette album spanning mixed-genre electronics with heavy cinematic overtones. Fresh off his LP as Auscultation for the 100% Silk label, Shanahan's newest release under his own name, "Frozen Clock Hovering" explores the complex, esoteric rhythmic zones, sewing dense forests of electronic drones all in crescendo, heavily mixed with lush, otherworldly ambient spaces which, in harmony, act as a guide for the previously uncharted sonic journey that is "Frozen Clock Hovering".

“Frozen Clock Hovering' was simultaneously an attempt to seek comfort through creation, as well as raise the question—"When will this all end?" Musically, this work was inspired by early intersections of jazz and electronic music—like collaborations between jazz superheroes like Joe Henderson and Herbie Hancock and legendary synth explorer Dr. Patrick Gleason. It also draws from other early electronic music and music concrete works, as well as meditative synth work, and the patient passages of folks like Andrew Chalk and Drunjus. I'm sure that to most listeners, this work will likely and rightfully pale in comparison to the aforementioned references, but this is definitely what I was listening to and feeling inspired by when I recorded this work, also Mike at Ratskin asked me to write a blurb, otherwise, I would probably say very little, as I'm usually not one for "artist statements." From an emotional standpoint, this collection was created in the shadow of lingering pain, trauma, and general futility in tandem with the heartbreak of a failing and now finished relationship with someone I was very in love with. It sits in a contemplative purgatory, as I try to figure out how to scale its towering walls and pull myself out.” - Joel Shanahan

Electronic pulses trigger huge electronic events, shooting us into space and slowly recoiling back through the cold atmosphere. plunging into the cold barren sea, leaving a faint crease in the sky, like brushes painting a sonic map to unknown futures, when you look back up into an unknown space all you can see is one, isolated Frozen Clock Hovering,

RAT087: TYLER HOLMES "NOTHING" CS/DL

For their new two song EP, “Nothing” Oakland, CA-based producer, and multi-disciplinary artist and Ratskin Records collective member Tyler Holmes offers us two brand new compositions “Nothing” and “ Rinse [Breath Play]” Through intense voice and breath manipulation backed with their minimal yet powerfully presented electronic based compositions, nodding to Holly Herndon, Xiu Xiu, and Cocorosie, Holmes offers two forcefully elegant and haunting tracks both separate from but in dialogue with their upcoming full length LP “Nightmare In Paradise” on Ratskin in Fall 2020. Holmes once again tightropes a complex web of emotion, sound and movement within their own sonic world into a pair of sonically powerful worlds. We hope you appreciate these beautiful electronic compositions as much as we do.

RAT083: HILLBOGGLE / NERFBAU "Onyx One" CS/DL

"Onyx Split Series One" is the first installment of the next iteration of our split single series. The first was the GOLD BOX which featured twenty artists featured across ten cassettes, all doing 2:30 tracks. The first is Hillboggle on the A-side and Nerfbau (RK/MD) lineup on the B side. This is the first new NERFBAU material since co-founder and brother Jsun Adrian McCarty tragically left this mortal coil in the ghostship fire on Dec 2, 2019. This release is for him.

Hillboggle is the nascent "noise-grass collaboration" of San Francisco recorder Derek Gedalecia and his father David on banjo and dobro, debuted in 2013 as a cassette b-side through Derek's prolific Headboggle project. Imagined as a way to explore the elder Gedalecia's own experiments with unconventional sounds in the 60s -- Dwight Pavlovic, Crash Symbols

Nerfbau is wrestling foam-choked streams and sunless oil-slicked oceans back into cataracts of blinding consciousness. Theorems are laid forth herein as "Error Swarms” and proofs conducted using custom sequencers, laryngopharynx, reprocessed wind instruments, guitars, sound-object graphical processors and Dow Chemical's styrofoam modified with Cyanoacrylate. - Resipiscent Records
